Monero payment proof: what it is and when you need one

Monero does not publish amounts and destinations the way transparent chains do, which is the point of it and also the reason a transaction hash alone proves less here than elsewhere. The payment proof — your wallet may call it a transaction key or a spend proof — lets you demonstrate to a specific recipient that a specific transfer was made, without revealing anything to anyone else. It is generated by you, in your wallet, and it is the fastest way through an XMR support case.

What it does and does not reveal

A proof demonstrates one transfer to one recipient. It does not open your wallet, does not show your balance, and does not link your other transactions. This is worth understanding before you decline to send one: it gives away far less than the intuition suggests.

Where wallets keep it

Most Monero wallets can produce one from the transaction in your history, though they name it differently. You will need the transaction, the recipient address it went to, and the proof string the wallet generates for that pair.

  • Look for “get transaction proof”, “payment proof”, “tx key” or “spend proof”.
  • A proof is bound to one recipient address, so generate it against the address your order gave you.

Why we ask for it rather than for documents

It answers the only question a support case about a transfer actually has: did this transfer happen, to this address, for this amount. Who you are is not part of that question, and we do not ask it.

What to gather before writing

  • The Monero payment proof generated against the address your order gave you.
  • The transaction hash of your deposit, copied from your wallet or from a block explorer.
  • The asset, the network and the exact amount you sent — all three, because two of them cannot identify a transfer.
  • The order id, from the address bar of your order page.

What to do now

  1. Open your order page. It is the single place the status is true, and it updates itself.
  2. Write to support with the evidence above. A person answers within 24 hours.
  3. None of this asks you to prove who you are. If we need anything from you, it is evidence that you control the sending wallet, not identification.
