What a Transaction Hash (TX ID) Is and What It Is For

What a transaction hash or TX ID is in crypto, where to find yours, and how to check transfer status with it in a blockchain explorer.

What a Transaction Hash (TX ID) Is and What It Is For

A transaction hash, also called a TX ID, is the unique identifier for your transaction on the blockchain. It is a long string of letters and numbers that gets assigned the moment the transfer is broadcast. Think of it as your blockchain receipt.

What it looks like

A long string of letters and numbers, unique to that specific transaction. It appears as soon as the transfer enters the network.

When you need it

You sent crypto and want to confirm delivery: paste the TX ID into the explorer for that network and check the status. You contacted support about a delay: they will ask for the TX ID to find exactly your transaction among millions. You received a payment and want to keep proof: the TX ID is a permanent, unalterable record.

Where to find your TX ID

In your wallet's transaction history. In the confirmation email or notification from an exchange or service. In the order or account page of any service where you made a swap or withdrawal.

How to check by TX ID

Open the explorer for the right network, paste the hash into the search bar. The explorer shows: status (confirmed, pending, or dropped), amount, sender and recipient addresses, timestamp, and confirmation count.

One thing to know

The TX ID appears immediately after you send, but the transaction may still be unconfirmed at that point. A "pending" status means it is queued to be included in a block. On busy networks, how long that takes depends on the fee attached to the transaction.

On swapss.lol, the payout TX ID is visible in the order card after the exchange completes.
