Common Mistakes When Swapping Crypto, and How to Avoid Them

Most losses in crypto swaps come from a small set of avoidable mistakes, not from scams. Here are the ones that come up most often.

Sending on the wrong network

This is the number one mistake. USDT exists on TRC20, ERC20, Solana, TON, and other networks. The wallet address can look similar across networks, but the networks are different.

How to avoid it: before sending, check both the address and the network. TRC20 addresses start with T. Solana addresses are a long string in a distinct format. If the network is shown next to the address, read it before hitting send.

Forgetting the memo or tag

Many exchanges and services require a memo on deposit. This is especially true for TON, XRP, and XLM. Without the memo, the funds arrive at the exchange's wallet but do not credit to your account. Getting them back takes time and a support ticket.

How to avoid it: when copying a deposit address, check whether there is a separate field for a memo, tag, or comment. If there is, copy that too.

Sending less than the minimum amount

Exchange services have minimum order sizes. Sending below the minimum means the order will not execute and the funds sit waiting for a resolution.

How to avoid it: confirm that your amount meets the minimum the service shows before sending.

Taking too long with a fixed rate

A fixed rate is held for a limited time. Create the order, get distracted, let the timer run out, and the service may recalculate at the current rate.

How to avoid it: with a fixed rate, send as soon as you create the order.

Copying the address incorrectly

After pasting, verify at least the first and last few characters. For larger amounts, check the full address.

Closing the order page

If you sent the coins but closed the page and lost the order ID, tracking the status becomes harder. Save the order link or write down the order number before you send.
