Notes on individual wallets

Monero GUI
The reference wallet from the Monero project. Simple mode connects to a remote node; advanced mode gives full control including your own node. Tor is marked partial deliberately: the GUI has no built-in Tor, and the project’s own guide tells you to launch it through external torsocks, noting native support is expected in a future version.
Monero CLI
The command-line wallet, and the widest platform list here - the only one shipped for FreeBSD and for Android on ARM. Unlike the GUI it takes a proxy argument, so Tor and I2P work natively without a wrapper.
Feather
Desktop only, and the only wallet here that ships a Tor binary in the release and broadcasts over Tor by default - which is why it is the one packaged for Tails. It uses the same wallet2 core as the official wallets, so it scans locally. It has no built-in swap and its own feature table says there are no plans for one, whatever comparison articles claim. Note the release date: at over a year old it is the least recently updated wallet in this table.
Cake Wallet
Multi-coin, on every platform, and the most actively released wallet here. The Monero view key stays on the device, so it scans locally rather than handing a server your outputs. Tor is marked partial on the project’s own wording: built-in Tor exists but is labelled experimental, with onion presets for Monero and Zcash only. Its swap is a set of named third-party providers, not an exchange Cake runs itself.
Monero.com
The Monero-only build of Cake Wallet, from the same repository and shipped in the same release, but mobile only. Two cells differ from Cake’s on purpose: view-only is marked not verified because monero.com itself does not state it, and hardware lists Ledger alone because the Monero project’s hardware table places Cake Wallet and Monero.com under Ledger but not under Trezor.
Monerujo
A long-standing Android-only wallet, Apache-licensed, with Tor through Orbot and a curated node list you can add your own node to. It calls itself a lightwallet in the sense that there is no blockchain to download; it does not state who performs the scanning, so that cell is left unverified rather than assumed. It is also the only wallet that pairs with Sidekick, an air-gapped signer built from an old Android phone. Its last release is over a year old.
Edge
Mobile-only and actively shipping. It runs against its own light-wallet server by default, and in July 2026 added a full-sync option that downloads and validates the chain on the device - the opposite direction to wallets dropping Monero. It has the most unverified cells here because its public pages document the product rather than the privacy mechanics: nothing on its own site states Tor support, view-only wallets, subaddresses or custom nodes, so none of those are claimed.
Stack Wallet
Multi-coin, GPL-3.0, with Tor added progressively since 2023 including per-node clearnet or Tor selection. Several cells are unverified for one structural reason: the project publishes no documentation site, so anything not stated on the landing page or in release notes could not be confirmed at source. Its swap is third-party and it says plainly that it runs no exchange itself.

Hardware wallets and Monero

A signing device is not a wallet, so these are listed separately. In every case the device holds the keys and a normal Monero wallet drives it - neither vendor handles Monero inside its own desktop app.

Ledger Nano S, Nano S Plus, Nano X
Use with: Monero GUI, Monero CLI, Cake Wallet / Monero.com, Feather, Monerujo. Monero is not handled inside Ledger Live. Ledger’s own page says to connect the device to a compatible third-party wallet. Feather additionally lists Stax and Flex, which the Monero project’s table does not name.
Trezor Model T, Safe 3, Safe 5, Safe 7
Use with: Monero GUI, Monero CLI, Feather, Cake Wallet. Monero is not supported inside Trezor Suite - Trezor states this directly and its own machine-readable coin record marks Suite support as false. The Monero project’s table lists only the GUI, the CLI and Feather; Trezor additionally names Cake, and Safe 7 appears on Trezor’s list but not on the Monero project’s.
Sidekick A spare Android phone
Use with: Monerujo. Not a purchased device: it turns an old phone into an offline signer that pairs with Monerujo over Bluetooth, from the same author. Open source under Apache-2.0, but it has had exactly one release, in September 2024.

Checked and deliberately left out

These still appear in wallet round-ups. Both stopped being Monero wallets, so listing them would send someone to software that cannot hold their coins.

Exodus
No longer a Monero wallet. Exodus ended support for XMR on 18 August 2025; the wallet is gone from the app and holders are told to import their keys elsewhere. Source
MyMonero
Shut down. The project sunset its wallet service on 6 January 2026 and pointed users at Cake Wallet; mymonero.com no longer serves the site, and the last desktop release was in November 2022. Source

How to choose, in plain language

Start with what you are protecting. Money you intend to spend this month and money you intend to still have in five years are different problems, and no single wallet is the right answer to both.

  • Spending on a phone. A light wallet syncs in seconds because a remote server scans the chain for you - which means that server can associate your outputs. For pocket money that is a reasonable trade, and the wallets that state it plainly are the ones worth using.
  • Savings. Prefer open source, your own node, and a hardware device if you own one. The combination means no third party learns your balance and no single compromised machine can spend your funds.
  • Watching a balance safely. A view-only wallet holds the view key but not the spend key, so a shop counter or an accountant's laptop can confirm incoming payments without being able to move anything.
  • Hostile network. If the risk is who observes your connection rather than who reads the chain, Tor support is the column that matters. Without it your IP address ties you to your queries even though the amounts stay private.
  • Built-in swap is a convenience, not a wallet feature. In-app exchange is a third-party service embedded in the interface, with its own rates and its own rules. Useful, but judge it separately from the wallet itself.

Hardware support and release cadence both move. This table records what the projects themselves stated on 2026-07-28; before buying a device specifically for Monero, confirm on the vendor's own page that it still holds.

Which Monero wallet fits depends on facts that marketing pages rarely put side by side: whether it is open source, whether you can point it at your own node, whether it speaks Tor, whether it supports a hardware wallet.

The four questions that actually decide it

Most wallet advice is a popularity list. These are the properties that change how a wallet behaves for you. This table collects those, each checked against the project itself.

  • Open source: can anyone verify what the binary does with your keys?
  • Node choice: can you use your own node, or must you trust someone else with your queries?
  • Tor support: does it hide the network layer, or does your address exposure just move to your IP?
  • View-only mode: can you watch a balance from a machine that holds no spend key?

Light wallets trade privacy for convenience, honestly

A light wallet asks a remote server to scan the chain for you, which is why it syncs in seconds instead of hours. That server learns which outputs are yours. It is a defensible trade for spending money, and a poor one for savings - and the wallets that admit this are the ones worth trusting.

Hardware wallets and Monero

Support exists but is narrower than for Bitcoin or Ethereum, and it changes with firmware releases in both directions. Check the current state on the vendor page before buying a device specifically for Monero - this table records what we verified and when, not what was true a year ago.

Nothing here is tracked

The table ships with the page as static data, so filtering and comparing ask nothing of any server. Which wallet you are considering is nobody else’s business, including ours.

Questions

Which wallet is best for a beginner?
One that is open source, actively released, and lets you move to your own node later. The table marks all three so you can pick without taking anyone’s word for it.
Do I need to run my own node?
Not to start. It is the strongest privacy position and it costs disk and sync time; a wallet that supports both lets you decide later rather than at install.
How current is this table?
Each row carries the date we verified it against the project. Wallet capabilities change, so treat an old date as a prompt to re-check the vendor page.
